You rocked her to sleep when she was a baby and then taught her how to feed herself and “go potty.” When she was older you helped her learn how to read, cleaned her “boo-boos” when she fell, and wiped her tears when she got into arguments with her BFF (Best Friend Forever in teen lingo). Now she is maturing into a young woman and dealing with all the “fun stuff” we girls have to deal with. Your job as mom isn’t over yet. In fact, now is when she needs you most, no matter what she might think or say. She will always be your baby; but now is when you are beginning that transitional period from parent to friend and mentor. Too many moms, and dads for that matter, think they are either done with their role as parent by this stage or that their kids are done listening. To the contrary, teens need us more during this phase of their life than ever and we cannot abdicate our role as parent during this transitional period to their peers or society at large. It is for these reasons that Pink Diamond Defense is offering a Mother and Daughter class to mothers (or mother figures) and teens from thirteen to seventeen years old. Our mission is to partner with you and give you the tools to begin discussing self-defense as well as sexual assault and domestic violence prevention with your daughter. Our hope is that this class will provide an opportunity for lines of communication to be opened about a topic that can be difficult to discuss. Also, it is our hope that if anything ever does happen your daughter will feel comfortable coming to YOU for advice and help instead of others who may not have her best interest at heart. In the class we will be discussing the topics of women’s self-defense and dating/domestic violence awareness with a focus on internet and social networking safety. We will touch on topics like boundaries, alcohol and date rape drugs, and pre-indicators of predators. These are mature topics, but topics it is important for your teen to be aware of. This class will cover many of the things the Adult class covers but will be toned down a little bit because of the age of some of the participants. Some topics like date rape drugs will be mentioned only briefly and more information sent home, allowing you to discuss and share with your daughter what you wish. Older teens might prefer the adult class, but we still encourage mom to come along for all of the same reasons stated above. It is our goal to make this course as affordable as possible and allow women of all ages to have the opportunity to take the class several times since practice does make perfect. We are currently charging $30 per participant for the first class and then any additional classes on the same level will be reduced to $10. If a participant will bring a friend or family member with them to return classes, we will waive tuition completely for the returning student. Moms, if you would like to take the adult class first before bringing your daughter, your tuition for the Mother and Daughter class would be waived and you would only need to pay the $30 tuition for your daughter. We look forward to meeting you both.
